HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND

If you’re in the cities of Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal – here are some events for you to hit up this weekend!

I’d like to keep this ongoing, so in the future, if you know of any upcoming events – from one of these cities or elsewhere in the country – email them to us at ellebeaver@mail.com! (Especially YOU Montrealers. Because apparently it is impossible to find anything going on in your city online, since you’re all too cool for the internet or whatever.) Anyways… here’s your short & dirty list:

MONTREAL:

Friday, January 17

  • Feminist Dance Party (maybe…) – “La Gêne Collective with DJ France Castel, DJ Dyke Rivers, DJ Maurice and her feminist music will make you danse!” – As loft parties tend to go – there’s not a tonne of info on this at all online (read: basically none at all) – but try to make your way to Loftimpro and see what happens! 

    Time: 10pm-2:30am
    Cost: Pay what you can, $5-15 entry; BYOB
    Location: Loftimpro (3800 Blvd St. Laurent) – 3rd floor, orange door.

TORONTO:

All Weekend:

  • Ovarian Cysters: Punk Women on Film – A four day screening event that honours “women who made a scene.” With movie descriptions like “Two girls with big bikes and bad attitudes get themselves into some trouble” this is an event you don’t want to miss.

    Time: Friday & Saturday – 8pm, Sunday – 7pm
    Cost: $5-10 or Pay What You Can donation
    Location: Videofag (187 Augusta Ave.)

  • The Great Canadian Burlesque Expo – “The talented ladies of the Great Canadian Burlesque have been featured in television and film, can be caught dancing on stage with some of Toronto’s best bands and also be seen entertaining guests at private and corporate events across Canada.” Events all weekend, including Girlesque Academy in the Market on Sunday – including a session titled “Ultimate Self Confidence.” Head over to their website for more info.

Friday, January 17

  • RADAR Youth Social Drop-in Night – LGBTQ and ally youth. The Well works to provide a safe, positive space in which youth can express themselves, discuss topics of interest, enjoy social activities, and develop leadership and advocacy skills.

    Time: 7pm-9pm
    Cost: Free
    Location: 140 King Street East, Suite 101 (**Hamilton!**)

Saturday, January 18

  • Queer Russian Cabaret Audition – Ahead of the upcoming Sochi Olympics, and in the “rebellious spirit of queers who speak, sing and dance against injustice and boredom” – Videofag is hosting a Queer Russian Cabaret on February 1stHead over to the audition, they’re looking for singers, dancers, burlesque performers, drag artists, comedians and other performance artists.

    Time: 1pm-5pm
    Cost: Free
    Location: Videofag (187 Augusta Ave.)

VANCOUVER:

Friday, January 17

  • Movie Night, Screening ‘Finn’s Daughter’ – “Dr. Finn Jefferies works at a Toronto abortion clinic and shares her life with a long-time partner and an eleven year-old daughter.  When her partner dies, she becomes lost but grief and suffering have a way of challenging ones concept of who they truly are and what they really know.  A look at contemporary family values, reproductive rights, death threats, abortion issues and love”

    Time: 7pm
    Cost: $3 for movie and popcorn
    Location: James Bay New Horizons Activity Centre, 234 Menzies (**Victoria, BC**)

Saturday, January 18

  • Vigil in support of LGBT rights in Uganda – Vancouver activists have organized a Saturday evening vigil, planned to purposely take place just after Martin Luther King Day, to protest a new law in Uganda that would extend a maximum penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” to life imprisonment.

    Time: 5pm
    Cost: Free
    Location: Davie Village Community Garden at Davie & Burrard

Monday, January 20 (for those of us who include Mondays as weekends)

  • BiFocus – “A peer-lead social and support group helping bisexual and pansexual individuals with the challenges of bi-phobia and heterosexism. This all-genders support group is a confidential and nonjudgmental space to discuss shared experiences”

    Time: 7-9pm
    Cost: Free
    Location: 1033 Davie St (Buzz 610 for entry)
