Today in good news: Women’s hockey star Hayley Wickenheiser was just named Canada’s flag bearer at the 2014 Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremonies.
This will be Hayley’s fifth time representing Canada at the Winter Olympics, totally not even including that one time she was Team Canada’s softball team in the summer Olympics. She’s twice been named the MVP of the Olympics and is said to be the best women’s hockey player in the world.
She was the first woman to play full-time professional hockey in a position other than goalie, and the first woman to score a goal playing in a men’s professional league.
With a growing roster of strong, tough female athletes, Team USA hiring the first female to ever coach women’s hockey at the Olympic level, and the continuing debate over women’s hockey remaining in the Olympics at all, there’s a lot to look out for at Sochi 2014. So stay tuned.
