A Rainbow of Cocktails to Show Your PRIDE

rainbow cocktails pride

Happy PRIDE everyone!!

As we all know, this year Toronto is extra proud, and inviting the whole world to see. And the whole world has basically shown up.

I don’t know about you, but I really can’t handle crowds, at all. I don’t like bumping into people, I don’t like having to weave my way through hoards of people while trying to follow a friend (who is somehow ALWAYS naturally very good at quickly slinking through the barriers of arms and legs and torsos). I don’t like it, and I won’t do it. I am 74 years old.

UNLESS – I’ve had a couple of delicious cocktails to help me out.

And the only thing better than a summery cocktail on a hot day is a THEMED summery cocktail on a whole hot weekend! That’s why I took it upon myself to do a tonne of research and find the best recipes and combinations to create a big ol’ RAINBOW of cocktails (not making this post full of puns is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do) for your happiness and enjoyment this weekend. You can thank me later. Now let’s get on started and make our way from red to violet.

RED

Obviously we’ve got a lot of options here but YOU KNOW WHAT let’s just go for a classic. The absolute perfect drink to start of a weekend of sun, singing and sexuality – Sangria.

Everyone has their own version of the perfect sangria, and while I’ll admit that most of the time mine is just a delicate combination of “Whatever is in my fridge” – here’s one that I’ll make up if I’m planning ahead:

2 bottles of red wine

1 cup (.. or so) brandy

1/2 cup triple sec

1/2 cup lemonade

1/2 cup orange juice

About a bottle of something fizzy (Sprite is good for a sweeter mixture, but tonic or carbonated water will work)

1 Lemon, sliced

2 Oranges, sliced

1/2 pineapple, sliced and diced

Strawberries, apple, any seasonal fruit, sliced and diced.

Et voila! Get yourself a glass and your festivities are off to a classy start.

ORANGE

Blood. Orange. Negroni.

You’re welcome.

30ml gin

7ml campari

14ml vermouth

28 grams of blood orange juice

ice

YELLOW

I have one word for you: Shandy. Actually, two words: Ginger Shandy.

You just can’t go wrong here – a light refreshing white beer, delicious and zesty lemon – and best of all – the added boost of some ginger (…beer) means you can have this drink FIRST THING if you need to work on tending a post-parade hangover. It’s super simple, too:

Mix three bottles of Hoegaarden (or another white beer of your choosing) with one bottle of ginger beer. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon, slice the other half thinly – add ice to your glass, pour and you are good to go. (You can add mint if you want, to make this already refreshing drink EVEN MORE refreshing! You do you.)

GREEN

To be honest, when I remembered that green was a colour in the rainbow (about one minute ago) – I was a bit worried. “Oh no!” I thought. “I really didn’t think this one through,” was my general sad state of mind. But then – I remembered – cucumbers! mint! herbs! avocado (…)! Ok maybe not avocado! And although I love a good cucumber cocktail, they just aren’t GREEN enough. An accent colour is not what this is all about. So, mojitos it is! And not just any mojitos – FROZEN mojitos!

The recipe for this drink comes from Bobby Flay at the Food Network, and we really should all take some time out of our busy days to send them a proper thank-you.

1/4 cup simple syrup (made by taking equal parts sugar and water and boiling them together until the sugar dissolves)

2 limes, juiced

12 fresh mint leaves

4 ounces of white rum

2 cups crushed ice

Start by blending the syrup, limes and mint leaves, then add the rum and ice – blend until frothy and ENJOY.

BLUE

Probably one of the most vibrant cocktails on this list, I’m not sure I recommend having a WHOLE LOT of these before you go out. A) because you may not in fact make it out, and B) your tongue is sure to turn an equally vibrant shade of blue. So team, if you’re ready for it – here’s how to make a delicious BLUE HAWAIIAN:

30 ml rum

30ml blue curacao

20ml coconut cream (milk and juice together)

pineapple juice

Mix rum, curacao and coconut cream with ice (either in a blender, or just use crushed ice) – fill the rest of your glass with pineapple juice and get ‘er done.

PURPLE/INDIGO/VIOLET/HOWEVER THE RAINBOW ENDS

By this point, you’ve probably gone into some kind of comatose state due to reckless sugar indulgence. So – we’re going to end on a bit of a sweet/sour note instead, with one of my favourite drinks of all time – the cherry margarita!

All you need is:

1 cup tequila

1 cup cherry juice (For something a little more sour, use concentrate instead)

Roughly 1 and a half a cup of cherries

2 limes, juiced

1/2 cup cointreau (or other orange-flavoured liqueur)

Combine all of your ingredients and pour over ice (or blend together if your brain isn’t too frozen from the mojitos), drink, enjoy and CELEBRATE.

So there you have it! A beautiful rainbow, a natural phenomenon of light, colour and love. You should be well on your way to expertly snaking through even the busiest and proudest of crowds.

Enjoy! And happy Pride!! <3
